石川県能登町内に建設中の巨大なイカのモニュメントに、新型コロナウイルスに対応するため国が地方に配る「地方創生臨時交付金」が充てられている。交付金の使い道を巡っては、コロナとの関係が不透明な事例が各地で問題になっているが、同町でも疑問視する声がある。
町が建設を進めるモニュメントは幅約13メートル、高さ約4メートル。イカの口の部分から内部に入ることもできる。特産品イカの魅力を発信する施設「イカの駅つくモール」付近に設置予定で、すでに建設は始まっている。ライトアップも行う。建設費は約3千万円。うち約2500万円が交付金でまかなわれる。
交付金はコロナ対応の緊急経済対策として配られる。町は、イカのモニュメントは、国が示した活用事例のうち「地域の魅力の磨き上げ事業」「地域の名産品の魅力発信事業」に該当すると判断。交付金の事業に合わせて、「コロナ終息後の観光の目玉にする」(町担当者)ことを決めたという。
