「免疫学的には、４つの血液型のなかでいちばん病気に強いのはＯ型です」
藤田教授は、人間ドックを受けた成人5000人の血液について、リンパ球の割合を調べたそうだ。
「すると、Ｏ型が39 パーセントで、４ つのなかでは最多でした。次がＢ型で37 パーセント、Ａ型が36 パーセント、ＡＢ型が34 パーセントという結果になりました」
リンパ球は、生体防御にかかわる重要な細胞で、異物（抗原）に遭遇すると、それを排除するための抗体をつくりはじめる。したがって、リンパ球が多いということは、抗体が多く、免疫力が高いということだ。
免疫力の高さは、４つの血液型がもつ抗体から説明できる。
「Ｏ型の人は、抗Ａ抗体と抗Ｂ抗体の両方をもつことは、先に述べました。これらふたつの抗体を体内で絶えずつくりつづけているので、免疫力が活性化されています。
反対にＡＢ型は、どちらの抗体もつくっていないので、４タイプのなかでは免疫力が弱いといえます。
Ａ型とＢ型については、抗Ａ抗体をつくるほうが免疫力が高くなるので、２位がＢ型、３位がＡ型です」
こうした免疫力の違いが、各血液型の行動パターンの違いとなって表れると考えてもいいのではないか、というのが藤田教授の意見だ。
「免疫力が最も高いＯ型は、あれこれ考えるよりどんどん行動するし、人の中へも遠慮なく入っていきます。これは、そうしても大丈夫なだけの強さをもっているからかもしれません」
Ｏ型の免疫力の高さについては、藤田教授の実験や過去のデータによっても明らかにされている。
「たとえば、Ｏ型は梅毒に感染しにくく、重症化もしません。サルモネラ菌や大腸菌、肺炎球菌も、Ｏ型の血清中ではあまり増殖しません。こうした強さが、Ｏ型のおおらかで行動的な性格を支えている可能性があります。一方、Ａ型やＡＢ型は、他人との間にほどよい距離を置こうとするのです」
